The one Dick Durbin drew was funny - did you see "Metropolis, home of Superman"? Turns out there is an actual Metropolis, Illinois right where he marked it.

I mean that powerful people frequently dodge punishment all too easily--or, maybe more accurately, they evade the indictments and trials and the "trappings" of justice that would necessarily precede punishment being meted out. There is a very real strain of critique wherein all shall be forgiven--for our overlords. Not for the rest of us. This isn't so much the case when the crime is salacious or when the person in question is deemed to be in need of being taken down a peg (Martha Stewart). While Roman Polanski had sex with a minor, and that definitely qualifies as salacious, it's really his fleeing the country that's mostly at issue.

I'm ambivalent (but, in the end, not really) because he's really quite old and many predatorial-sexual crimes (but probably not in this case--not even close) are blown way up. Let No Cooler Heads Prevail is usually the mood. Make a monster and kill it.

Also, I meant to add in the original post that the victim's forgiveness or whatever shouldn''t really count for much; while very generous, it's too emotionally based to really have a bearing. If she were consumed with vengeance and wanted Polanski executed, we would rightly ignore her.

Really, though, a country with 3 million prisoners just can't be making exceptions in cases like this. Either be consistent or change the law.

So, I think this piece is great, and I appreciate your sentiments both about child sexuality/sex offender laws, and about privilege being a 'get out of jail free' card. What I don't get is why you say that it's a 'pickle.' Is your ambivalence grounded in your civ lib view of sex offender laws, or is there something else? Maybe I'm overreading that word, but I'm curious...

I actually met Porochista Khakpour (the author) once, through a friend. She was nice. I usually hate people my age who write well and are published, but not her.

I loved the "thirtysomething" article. That article was basically speaking to a rare type of person, and I am one of them. I totally used to regard "thirtysomething" as some kind of urgent must-know thing that I never quite got. Or never got until I become a twentysomething and changed my name to hope.
